FAITH THAT OVERCOMES

“—for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that overcomes the world even our faith.” 1 John 5:4

There seems to be a bit of a theme coming through about faith over the last couple of weeks. I have just been reading Rick Renner’s Gems from the Greek on this verse which was so encouraging.

The word overcome is the Greek word Nikos where of course Nike running shoes took their name. Overcome means to conquer. It describes an athlete who gained the mastery of the competition and ultimately reigned supreme as champion over the games. It first tells us when we begin the walk of faith, we enter into a real-life competition. By faith we are put right into the middle of the ring. Our faith pits us directly against the devil’s power. He hates our faith. Satan may try and go for a knock out punch but even if he knocks us flat he cant keep us down on the ground. Even Paul said he was cast down but not destroyed. One translation says “We occasionally get knocked down but never get knocked out”.

This means we have a faith that overcomes the world. It’s a faith that supersedes, overrides, any event, circumstance or any difficult thing the devil try’s to throw at us. The most powerful weapon is our faith in Jesus our faith in God’s word. If you hold to your faith, refuse to give up your faith you will overcome everything the devil throws at you.
