PRAYING FOR ELECTIONS

“I urge then first of all that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good and pleases God our saviour” 1 Timothy 2:1-2

We have elections coming up in about 16 weeks. This is the time to start praying for our Govt. I was listening to Family first NZ on what they call straight talk. It’s a panel of about 6 Christians and even 1 or 2 ex- politicians. They all said that in this election they are all strugglingly to know who they should vote for this time. The general consensus amongst them is that nearly all of politics in NZ have moved far more left in recent times and promote more and more woke and anti-Christian beliefs or policies. They said its harder and harder to be a Christian or conservative in NZ politics. Also, unfortunately some of the Christian parties have been an absolute disaster over the last 25 odd years. The reality is also no Christian party is going to get near the 5% threshold. Also, its important to remember all those votes under 5% are not disregarded but are given to the 2 leading parties on election night. I must confess even I’m not sure this time where to cast my vote. We all tend to have our favourite party we vote for, but this time I’m not sure. We know that God sits over the nations and He raises up and removes people but this verse tells us God also looks to work through His people in prayer. Generally, I think we tend to be lazy when it comes to praying for our Govt, maybe because deep down we don’t really believe he will answer or it will make a difference. In some ways it feels as a nation we are at the crossroads. So, let’s make it a priority in our prayer times. God would raise up leaders for this time and season in NZ who will be able to stand in righteousness and not compromise. Pray for the salvation of our leaders and God would give them wisdom. Ask Him specifically who you should vote for and vote.
